Opposition Disapproval: Government Redirects Funds from Local Council Elections

A group of opposition leaders across political parties disapprove of the government’s recent decision to redirect funds initially designated for Local Council I and II elections. Officially confirmed by Ramathan Ggoobi, the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury, this move has sparked criticism from various leaders.

Raphael Magyezi, the Minister of Local Government, cited a shortage of funds in an earlier address, leading to a 180-day extension of the term for LC 1 and 2, effective from January 6.

Patrick Amuriat, president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), views this decision as a government failure in fulfilling democratic responsibilities. He emphasizes that if the elections aren’t a priority, the government should communicate this clearly to the nation.

Norbert Mao, president of the Democratic Party, suggests exploring cost-effective election options as an alternative. The Electoral Commission had initially budgeted Shs59 billion for the nationwide implementation of Local Council I and II polls.

Originally scheduled for 2021, the local council elections were postponed due to Covid-19 and other constraints.
