Legislators are grappling with the unexpected loss of esteemed senior Member of Parliament Cecilia Ogwal. Representing Dokolo district under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) banner, Ms. Ogwal passed away at the age of 77 in India, succumbing to cancer.
Over her extensive 26-year tenure in Parliament, which commenced in 1996, Ogwal earned the moniker “Iron Lady” for fearlessly critiquing the government’s shortcomings. Renowned for her outspokenness, she was dedicated to championing the nation’s development.
MPs, both emotionally and reverently, have offered eulogies praising Ogwal’s substantial contributions. She is remembered as a forthright politician who steadfastly upheld her convictions. Mathias Mpuuga, representing Nyendo Mukungwe Division, went on to commend her exemplary work ethic. Mpuuga drew a sharp contrast by noting her diligence in comparison to “lazy members of parliament who were always dodging parliamentary responsibilities.”
“Her sense of commitment and duty were impeccable… she offered lessons to those who were lazy and not wanting to work but pretending to be speaking and representing their people. She’s been very committed despite her old age and her sickness that eventually rolled back her power and energy,” remarked Mpuuga on Thursday.
Yusuf Nsibambi, the FDC’s party whip in parliament and Member of Parliament for Mawokota South, emphasized Ms. Ogwal’s notable endeavors in reconciling factions within the party. The loss of Cecilia Ogwal is not only mourned for her impactful parliamentary career but also for her unwavering commitment to national progress.
