Awaiting March 4: Will Martin Okoth Ochola Continue as Uganda’s IGP

The police have urged the public to refrain from speculating about the next Inspector General of Police (IGP) or the potential extension of Mr. Martin Okoth Ochola’s term.

Ochola, who took office in 2018 after Gen Kale Kayihura, is due to finish his term on March 4, sparking concerns among the public about whether he will be reappointed or if a new IGP will be chosen.

Fred Enanga, the Force’s spokesperson, addressed journalists at police headquarters in Naguru, cautioning against such speculations. He remarked, “We often receive speculation about the renewal of the IGP’s position or the possibility of a new appointment. Media reports suggesting internal conflicts within the top leadership competing for the position have been noticed.”

Enanga stressed that such claims are unfounded, emphasizing the dedication and political acumen required for the role of the IGP. According to police protocol, the IGP must demonstrate leadership competence and administrative proficiency.

“It is not a position open to lobbying; rather, qualified candidates undergo rigorous vetting by the police authority before their names are submitted to the appointing authority, the Commander in Chief of the armed forces, President Museveni,” Enanga explained.

He urged the public to await the outcome regarding the renewal of the IGP’s term or the appointment of a new individual. “Those who believe they can influence the president’s decision are mistaken. This process falls under the jurisdiction of the police authority, and they are competent in their assessment. Let us wait until March 4 to determine whether the current IGP will continue or if a new appointment will be made,” Enanga concluded.
