In Uganda’s coffee-growing regions, farmers are grappling with a surge in thefts, driven by the highest global coffee prices seen in decades. Robusta coffee, favored for instant beverages, has seen prices soar to levels not reached since the 1970s, pushing farm gate prices to 7,000 Ugandan shillings per kilogram. This price hike has attracted thieves who target farms, stripping beans from trees and damaging future crops. Farmers are employing creative security measures, including night guards and even using beehives to ward off potential thieves. However, this trend threatens the country’s ambitious goal of boosting coffee production by 2030.
