Charles Muhangi Honored Posthumously with Lifetime Achievement Award at Fortebet Real Stars Sports Monthly Awards
The late rally driver Charles Muhangi, a pioneer in Ugandan motorsport, has been posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Fortebet Real Stars Sports Monthly Awards for September 2024. Muhangi’s historic 1999 victory in the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) remains a milestone as he is still the only Ugandan to have ever won the prestigious title.
During the ceremony at Lazo Restaurant in Kololo on October 8, 2024, his widow, Petience Muhangi, accepted the award on behalf of the family. Muhangi’s legacy continues to inspire the current generation of athletes in Uganda, making him a lasting symbol of excellence in rally driving.

Football: Herbert Assimwe Named Footballer of the Month
Herbert Assimwe, a rising star in Ugandan football, secured the Footballer of the Month award for his stellar performance with Wakiso Giants in the Startimes Uganda Premier League. Assimwe, often referred to as “Camavinga,” netted crucial goals in every game throughout September, including standout performances against Mbale Heroes, Brightstars, and a brace against Maroons.
His dominance extended into the Airtel Masaza Cup, where he scored two additional goals for Buwekula, outclassing nominees Said Mayanja of KCCA FC and Enock Ssebagala of NEC FC.
In his acceptance speech, Assimwe attributed his success to teamwork: “It’s a pleasure to receive this award. This is all thanks to the effort and support of my teammates at Wakiso Giants, and I dedicate it to the Purple Sharks family.”
Boxing: Herbert Matovu Secures Boxing Title with Knockout Victory
Herbert Matovu was awarded Boxer of the Month for September after delivering a knockout blow to Tanzania’s Kheri Mbaruku in the Africa Boxing Union (ABU) regional title fight. The bout, held at YMCA on September 7, 2024, saw Matovu clinch the victory with a first-round knockout, cementing his place as a top contender in Ugandan boxing.
Matovu’s performance earned him the accolade, overcoming strong competition from Ukasha Matovu and Owen Kibira in the process.
Woodball: Isaac Ariho Leads Uganda Prisons to Another Title
In the Woodball category, Isaac Ariho was named Player of the Month for his significant role in securing Uganda Prisons their third consecutive Woodball League title. Ariho displayed incredible consistency, winning six out of seven matches, including a commanding 7-0 victory over Fred Turyakira. He concluded the season with critical wins against Simon Peter Otim and Delick Ankunda at Makerere University.
Ariho also showcased his skills in doubles, where he teamed up with Abednego Okello and Isaac Nabugere to win decisive matches against KIU and KU opponents.
