Jocelyn Uchanda, a renowned figure in Ugandan netball and a candidate for the presidency of the Uganda Netball Federation, has been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Real Stars Sports Agency. The award ceremony took place on September 3, 2024, at Lazo Restaurant in Kololo and recognized Uchanda’s significant contributions to the sport.

With a long and dedicated career managing the NIC Netball Club and the Uganda national netball team, the She Cranes, Uchanda has played a pivotal role in the development of netball in Uganda. Upon receiving the award, she expressed her deep appreciation, saying, “This award is a testament to the years of hard work and passion I’ve poured into netball. I am truly honored and humbled by this recognition.”

Uchanda also congratulated the other award winners from various sports and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence. “Whether in netball, football, boxing, or basketball, we are all part of the same sports family. Success comes from dedication and love for what you do, and I urge all athletes to keep that spirit alive.”

This Lifetime Achievement Award follows in the footsteps of previous recipients like Former Mukwenda Godfrey Mbalire, who was recognized in July for his contributions to the Masaza Cup. Uchanda’s recognition highlights her enduring influence in the world of Ugandan sports.

The event also honored top performers from other sports. Julius Ssenyonga, a talented young goalkeeper from Ssaza Ssingo, was named the best footballer of August after keeping three clean sheets in the 2024 Masaza Cup. At just 19 years old, Ssenyonga has already made a significant impact, previously winning awards in the Buganda Regional League with Ntugasazi FC and Kiyinda Boys.

In the basketball category, Lydia Babirye, a scholar-athlete based in the USA, was awarded the best basketball player of August. Babirye’s standout performance in the Basketball 3×3 World Cup qualifier helped Uganda secure a spot in the upcoming tournament in Mongolia. She was chosen over other notable players like Joel Lukoji of KIU Rangers and Shakira Navubya of UCU Canons.

In boxing, John Sserunjoji was recognized as the best boxer of August, marking his second ForteBet Real Stars Sports Monthly Award. Sserunjoji’s knockout victory against Egypt’s Ahmed Boloshy in the 8th round showcased his skill and determination in the middleweight division.

All winners received their awards, which included cash prizes, presented by Buikwe South aspiring Member of Parliament Isaac Mukasa, along with representatives from Jude Colour Solutions and ForteBet.

This ceremony not only celebrated the exceptional achievements of Uganda’s top athletes but also underscored the lasting contributions of leaders like Jocelyn Uchanda, who continue to inspire and shape the future of sports in Uganda.
